Aalavandhan / Abhay (Tamil/Hindi ,2000)

Once-of-the-best-in-kamal

Produced by ‘Kalaipulli’Dhanu and written by Kamal Haasan himself, it was based on a serial written by Kamalji one of the Tamil weekly some years ago. It was a brilliant story of two brothers, one an animal and the other a ‘trained’ animal. Kamalji played both the roles himself. He rediically altered his physique for one of the brothers even shaving hi hair completely. He retained his regular looks for the second brother who is a commando in the film(a.k.a trained animal).

It was technically a difficult film for we wanted to have double role shots, which was never done before in indian screen. There were motion control cameras from Australia and some fine technicians from india for computer graphics, Madhu and krishna (they went on to fetch National Award for the same film). Thiru’s photography was fantastic. There were also some very tough jobs for the art director Samir Chanada, for he had to keep recreating the same sets for the double role version.

It is still one of the most acclaimed technical films in my career. Brilliant performance as usual from Kamalji. The film also starred Raveena tendon and Manisha Koirala. Music was by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and fights by Vikram Dhrama.
